Is Ilaiyaraja an Isaigyani ?

 

Yes, I believe so. "Isaigyani" means knowledgeable of music. Genius in music.

He gave hit songs in his first movie itself. "Machanai paartheengala" from "Annakili"

He made a breathless song "Mannil Indha Kaadhal"

He composed a happy song and a sad song both with the same melody and same tempo but changed background music. "Povoma Urgolam" and "Nee Enge"

He composed Bharathiyar songs. Lyrics pre-written were set to music. "Manadhil Urudhi Vendum" and "Nirpathuve Nadapathuve".

He composed a classical song only in Aaroham (crescendos). "Kalaivaaniye".

He composed a song on three notes only. Sa, Ri, Ga only. This is an exceptional achievement. Using only three notes and that too starting notes and composing start, middle and end all in three notes. Composing end are a difficult task. "Raagam Rasamayya" song

He used two rhythms in pallavi. Three rhythms in charanam. "Maman Kodukkum Seeru"

He has composed "Nothing but Wind" album with Hari Prasad Chaurasia.

He has composed "How to name it" album.

He has composed syphonies with foreign musicians.

He composed Coca Cola anthem.

He was so terrific in regional understanding that he made Coimbatore songs. Madurai songs. Salem songs. Thanjavur songs.

All these point to one thing only. He is an exceptional genius.

My attempt to the composing of Hanuman Chalisa is because of two reasons. One, I wanted to use 7 notes. Second, I wanted composition similar to Bach. Music notes made now for prelude, main stanzas and the conclusion. The prelude, main stanzas and the conclusion all have 7 notes. And the prelude, main stanzas and the conclusion all have point and counter-point style reminding us of German composer Johann Sebastian Bach.

The conclusion is not rendered vocally. Recording was done prior to composing the conclusion. And I do not have advanced sound mixing software.

I have deep bhakti for Shri Hanumanji. Let there be no doubt at all. All the seven notes are there in the music part. But the rendering vocally may not. This is because I have limitations.

Hanuman Chalisa now made complete. With prelude, main stanzas and the conclusion.I subscribed to Audio Mixer and managed to merge audio files.

Bose 500 back after repair

My Bose 500 got repaired.  Then I contacted Bose. They arranged the service of Servify.com.  Servify.com took the repaired Bose 500 from my quarters in Ranchi,  took to Kolkata,  repaired in Kolkata and brought back my Bose 500 back to Ranchi.

Ilayaraja

I lived most of my life in north India. But we had relatives in south. And we would go to south during summer. So south India was never alien to me.

Also I did my education in Coimbatore. I spent four years there.

Initially during engineering, I secretly loved only RDBurman, Laxmikant Pyarelal, Kalyanji Anandji, Ravindra Jain and others. 

But gradually I started to love Ilayaraja songs. Probably he is the only music director who was able to blend folk type of songs for cinema so well. Anyway, that is what I liked about Ilayaraja. His folk type of songs. He was a genius and had a great variety. He was experimental too.

Ten favorite songs of Ilayaraja are

Many of my blog friends down south may not know that I love his songs so much. And also the fact that I am able to recall them.

Good wishes to Ilayaraja sir. His music is way too far ahead when compared to the person Ilayaraja. And that is what I feel. And it is meant to be a compliment.

R D Burman

R D Burman is known all over India for his music in Mumbai film industry. This is a write-up on the human RDB.

RDB is the son of S D Burman. When he got born and started crying, Ashok Kumar said that he is crying in the note Pa. And called him Pancham. Meaning five. Because Pa is the fifth note in sargam. So the pressure on RDB started right from his birth.

SDB probably wanted his son to be away from music and lead a normal life of concentrating on studies. SDB therefore sent RDB to Kolkata so that the young child stays away from the big bad world of movie industry.

Thereafter, it is not known why SDB insisted that RDB start music composition. He was given a target for 5 melodies per day.

RDB did enter film music industry. He after some time showed a lot of popularity. Then there is the famous incident of father-son duo walks. Earlier people would say SDB and the son of SDB are having a walk. Later people said RDB and the father of RDB are having a walk. 

RDB gained huge popularity.

He got support of some of the best musicians India had. Hari Prasad Chaurasia, Shiv Kumar Sharma, Kersi Lord, Tony Vaz, Manohari Singh, Suraaj Sathe, Bhanu Gupta, Franco Vaz, Homi Mulla to name a few.

Subhash Ghai took Laxmikant Pyarelal for Karz and not RDB as promised to him earlier. This hurt RDB a lot and was under acute depression for many days.

He managed to give hits and 1942 A love story was his last movie. 

I wrote in my blog comment earlier that 1942 songs were not good. I was passing an honest opinion of mine; but I failed to realize at that particular time how much I loved RDB songs. How imaginative he was. How much rhythmic. Even today I feel sorry for that particular comment.

RDB was a great musician and many times I feel sad when I listen to 100 greatest hits of RDB in my Bose 500. Why did I ever write that songs of 1942 were not good.

The music of Ranchi

 

The music of Ranchi is most amazing.  They are good.  They are rhythmic.  Congo is mostly used. They are modern.  They are tribal. They have been recorded in modern studios. 

You get to listen to them from loudspeakers during marriages and special occasions.  The local radio stations too play these songs in the afternoon.  

I asked my friend what are these songs called? He told me a term. Unfortunately I don't remember the exact word.

I am mostly a loner and am interested in drawing and some equations.  So I did not venture into discovering about the songs. The modern and tribal variety with excellent beats.

I shall get back to you in a day or two with the name of this type of songs.  I shall provide a link to the particular genre of song that I am mentioning if possible.
